The Rotary Club of Metro Providence partnered with WPRI12 and Fox Providence and the Highlander Charter School to pack 12,000 meals for needy Providence area school children.
The ingredients and supplies to pack the meals were provided by the Outreach Program, an international organization, based in Iowa, whose End Hunger NE campaign is led by Matthew Martin.
This is the fourth food packing event the Rotary Club of Metro Providence has done with End Hunger NE and we have had at least three other packing events locally that were the result of attendees bringing the ideas back to their organizations.
This food packing event was a part of WPRI's annual Founder's Day events. Each year every member of the WPRI team goes to at least one social service event across their broadcast region. By making the food packing one of their events, over 30 members of the WPRI team attended. They helped bring in the supplies and ingredients, set up the packing lines, pack the food and clean up afterwards. Members were rewarded with Allie's Donuts, Dunkin' Coffee and a great feeling of accomplishment.
The ready to make prepared meals will be distributed by the Highlander Charter School during their summer programs to help children who would otherwise not have enough at home, get the nutrition they need while school meal program are on hiatus.
